Thoughts - One

Tilling the Mind

Feedback can be manure on the field of the creative mind or it can be salt. Sincere feedback given at the appropriate points in time can engender epiphanies. Ignorant or untimely feedback can be a distraction that pollutes the creative mind and impedes the flow of creative energies into successful works.

Keep away from the haters until you're done.  They be hatin.

Butternut

My supplier, Tom from Michigan, sold me a couple chunks of butternut, one air dried and one from the kiln.  It's some nice stuff as far as looks and the the finished product, a bit prone to tearout no matter how sharp the gouge and how fine the cut in the turning though.  Here's the air dried piece.  13" wide and 4" high.  Finish is just walnut oil and beeswax.  Should be good for salads and such.  I rolled the inner lip  to support the thunb for one handed carrying and passing.  I'll be interested to see if their is any difference in the look or workability of the kiln dried piece.

bowl process video

Posted above is a 12 minute video of my current bowl making process.  YouTube bounced it because Sony didn't like the radio playing in the background; or maybe it was my singing??  The bowl I make is small and rather crude as I was concentrating on filming the process more than on the product.  It's one with the scoop in it in this picture with several of my other bowls.

testing 123

I started turning about a year year ago.  I have a Jet 1642 lathe.

That's what it looked like hours after it was set up.  I should take a new picture as the space has quite a "patina" now.

I've mostly gravitated towards bowls, especially large ones like this:

and this:

Let's see how this comes through.  test test
